SAYN CASTLE PARK

THE ROMANTIC PALACE PARK IN SAYN, AT THE FOOT OF THE CASTLE OF THE PRINCES OF SAYN-WITTGENSTEIN-SAYN

The Sayn Palace Park, framed by the Brex and Sayn streams, was designed between 1840 – 1850 by the architect Carl Friedrich Thelemann on behalf of Prince Ludwig Adolf Friedrich zu Sayn-Wittenstein-Sayn (1799-1866) in the style of a landscaped English garden.

The romantic castle pond with its water fountain and the pond bridge with its characteristic log railing, curved paths, many benches and secluded quiet places tempt you to linger in the castle park. Sayn Castle Park today has all the splendour of the time of its creation in the 19th century – an ideal place for anyone seeking tranquil relaxation. However, it is the Sayn Castle Butterfly Garden created by Princess Gabriela that forms the main attraction in the centre of Sayn Castle Park.

Sayn Castle Park is also a wonderful backdrop for events. The Sayn Castle and Park Festival has taken place on the second weekend in September for more than 40 years. Sayn Castle Park is particularly popular as a wedding party venue: a backdrop for unforgettable photos.

Even with the many visitors, plants and animals are also very much at home here. A few trees from the horse chestnut avenue, dating back over 200 years, are still preserved. Elm species that have become rare and ‘exotics’ such as the bald cypress form the habitat for many animals. Rare bat species, many birds, including the kingfisher, insects, squirrels and much more can be discovered by attentive observers. Water birds aplenty pose for a photo on the castle pond.
